Inscription. Lewis Ruffner. . Born 1797, he was a prominent salt manufacturer in the Kanawha Valley. A member of the Restored Government of VA and Constitutional Convention for WV statehood, he was a major general in the state militia and served in the House of Delegates, 1863-64. After the war, he and his wife Viola supported educating African Americans, including Booker T. Washington. Died at Malden, 1883. .
