Roosevelt Honors Mayos. . Near this marker on August 8 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt dedicated a bronze plaque in behalf of the American Legion to Doctors William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo. Speaking before 75,000 people, the President of the United States honored "Dr. Will" and "Dr. Charlie" by extending the nation's thanks for their lifelong service. The Legion's plaque also cited them "for distinguished services to our sick and disabled comrades and to suffering humanity". In addition to National Commander Edward A. Hayes of the American Legion there were present for the ceremonies George H. Dern, United States Secretary of War, the Governors of Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Minnesota and many other prominent citizens. . This historical marker was erected in 1964 by the William T. McCoy Post of the American Legion in memory of Gregory Phillip Gentling. It is in Rochester in Olmsted County Minnesota
