Inscription.

This Douglas Fir is about
700 years old. It would,
therefore, have been a
sapling about 200 years before
Columbus discovered America.
—————————————
Restored October 1986

This slab was found near Perrigo's Lake in the early 1930's and was floated to Ebey's Landing. It was then loaded on a sled, snubbed up short, and hauled up the gravel county road to the Coupeville City Park by Jim Berry, pioneer logger, and his son Burley Berry, to the park site. Fred Kreuger, a Coupeville farmer, built the base for the slab.

Jimmey Jean Cook supplied the information from the original sign stating that the slab came from a tree which was a sapling 200 years before Columbus discovered America in the year 1492. Therefore, it is in the vicinity of 700 years old.

The following have contributed to the restoration and refurbishing of the slab:

Coupeville Lions Club • Island County Historical Society
Coupeville Festival Association • Town of Coupeville
Carrol Peralta, Signmaker • Bill Herwick, metal straps

The following people donated their labor:
Mickey Clark, Chairman; Lew Naddy, Mayor; Ken Brooks
Don Scoby; George Knapp; Spec
