Inscription. Virginia's premier Black lyric poet who was a central figure in the cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, Anne Spencer gained national respect through her dedication to her writing and to the cause of cultural enlightenment for Black Americans.
 
Erected 1993 by Virginia Business and Professional Women's Foundation and Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.
