Rustic Canyon Eucalyptus Grove. . This grove was planted ca 1880 by Abbot Kinney, the founder of Venice, CA and developer of the Venice Canals. This land was acquired for the City of Los Angeles, spurred by fundraising by the Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association (SMCCA) in the early 1950s. It is part of the first U.S.Forestry Station and a California state and Los Angeles City landmark. Restoration was a cherished goal of the late historian and canyon resident, Betty Lou Young, who started the ball rolling as chair of the Park Grove Committee. A restoration goal was to carry on the experimental nature of the forestry station; thus a variety of trees have been planted. This work was carried to fruition by the SMCCA with major financial support from the Young family and from the Friends of Scott Gerwehr, who died in a tragic accident on nearby Sunset Blvd. Other crucial support of the "hands on" variety was provided by Randy Young, Dale Skinner, Ed Lowe and Chris Casady as well as by our brilliant and dedicated grove landscape designer, David Macgregor Card.
