1. The Battle of Sutherland Monument
On April 2, 1865, after losing Five Forks, the Confederates fought one final battle to protect the Southside Railroad. The loss here led to the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond.
Inscription. Dedicated in sacred memory to those valiant Confederates who remained steadfast to the end, and who gave their last full measure of devotion in defense of their homeland. Here the Confederates, under the Generals Wilcox and Heth, made a gallant stand, only to be overcome by overwhelming numbers.
