Inscription. Agriculture. . Montgomery County was the third county formed in Texas. In the 1820's Stephen F. Austin brought 4 colonies to Texas. The 4th and last colony came to Montgomery County. The settlers received Mexican land grants. They shared their land, built log cabins and planted their crops. Cotton emerged as the main cash crop. Corn was a staple for the pioneer families and also for livestock. Many land owners began developing large herds of cattle and beef became an important product. Feed crops were cultivated to sustain their livestock horses and ox drawn farming implements were used prior to the development of motorized equipment. Agriculture flourished through the 1950's. . This historical marker was erected by Heritage Museum of Montgomery County. It is in Conroe in Montgomery County Texas
