Crawford Long Monument
In memory of Dr. Crawford W. Long, the first discoverer of anesthesia, the great benefactor to the human race. Born Danielsville, Madison Co., Ga., Nov. 1, 1815. Died Athens, Ga, June 16, 1879

Sulphuric ether anesthesia was discovered by Dr. Crawford W. Long on March 30, 1842 at Jefferson, Ga., and administered to James M. Venable for the removal of a tumor.
