Inscription. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller transformed post-World War II theater with explorations of social injustice, individual responsibility, and the American dream. For more than 70 years he created screenplays, fiction, essays, an autobiography and plays. His early Broadway hits — All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), A View from the Bridge (1955) — and later plays, After the Fall (1964) and The Price (1968), achieved critical success. His first play produced on Broadway, The Man Who Had All the Luck (1944), was begun at this address. In 1956, Miller refused to name names when he was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was married to his college sweetheart Marry Slattery (1940-56); actress Marilyn Monroe (1956-61); and photographer Inge Morath (1962 to 2002).
