David Hammons’s Day’s End alludes to the waterfront’s history while offering a new vision for the Site. Hammons drew inspiration from a 1975 work of the same name by artist Gordon Matta-Clark, who cut large openings into a former warehouse on Pier 52. Hammons’s sculpture precisely follows the outlines and location of that shed.
