Governor Ninian Edwards. Ninian Edwards, Illinois' third governor, was born in Maryland in 1775. Edwards attended college in Pennsylvania but left to study law in Kentucky, where he became chief justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1807. Edwards moved to Illinois in 1809 when President James Madison appointed him Illinois Territory's governor (1809-1818). He led a regiment of 350 men during the War of 18 12. In 1818 when Illinois became a state, Edwards was elected as one of Illinois' first two U.S. senators. In 1826, he was elected governor of Illinois. During his term he worked to remove Native Americans from Illinois while also promoting immigration to the state which resulted in a significant increase in the population of Illinois. His primary residence was in Edwardsville during his political career, but in 1830 he moved to Belleville where he died in a cholera epidemic in 1833. He is buried in Springfield.
