Inscription.
Memorial Avenue. November 11, 1920. North Wilkesboro's Civic League dedicated this street, renamed as Memorial Avenue, to honor the memory of Wilkes County natives who had given their lives in World War I. A monument was erected and inscribed with these men's names, and one maple tree was planted for each of them. In 1999, the Memorial Avenue Tree Committee was formed in order to revitalize and maintain the avenue and to ensure that the memory of those who had made the ultimate sacrifice for us would continue to live on. Accordingly, 55 'Green Mountain' sugar maples were planted to replace the existing trees. On November 11, 2000, Memorial Avenue was rededicated with the unveiling of a restored monument which features an updated plaque, identifying all Wilkes natives known to have died in service during the Great War. ,
