Native Pollinators:
Washington DC is home to approximately 130 native bee species and close to 100 species of butterflies have been recorded in the District. These pollinators are crucially important to agriculture, biodiversity, and ecosystem function – yet they are struggling daily with habitat fragmentation and destruction.

In 1967, the Wood Thrush "Hylocichla mustelina" was named Washington DC's official bird It is a long distance migrant and flies to Central America for the winter, however, it is becoming more difficult to see the Wood Thrush in the District due to loss of habitat. As its spring and summer breeding habitat is broken into smaller pieces, it is important to sustain a network of pollinator gardens to ensure a positive future for the Wood Thrush.
