Inscription. Welcome to the San Marcos Cemetery parklands. An original 10 acres purchased in 1876 has grown to over 40 acres. Near the center of the park is a 19th century open-air chapel built for funeral and memorial services and is one of few remaining structures of its kind in central Texas.

The Texas Historical Commission marker on Morning Star Drive records the early history of this cemetery. Many pioneer citizens of our community are buried here as well as veterans of America's Wars. Observation of the names, dates, inscriptions and artistry of the gravestones tell something of the history and culture of the area.

A Master Plan and the Parks and Recreation Department establish standards for the development and maintenance of the park. The Citizen's Advisory Commission provides assistance to determine community expectations and recommendations. Review of the facility to establish needs for reconstruction, rehabilitation or aesthetic improvements is conducted every five years.

A basic premise is that the development and care of our cemetery must be as much for the living as for those who are at rest. Maintenance of the natural environment as an outdoor sanctuary provides a setting for remembrance, meditation and contemplation.

Significant projects completed in 2003-04 include a road to the five-acre Woodlawn addition and the columbarium. Relocation of the main entrance with new gates created additional acreage, street signs were installed and a podium/plaque was placed in the Prayer Chapel for remembrance of loved ones at rest elsewhere. Creativity, vision, and energy have combined to provide an exceptional facility cherished by the people of San Marcos. They have accepted stewardship for this historic place with pride and dedication.
