Inscription. Although he served in the U.S. Military for 35 years from 1923 to 1958, it was not until 1948 that he began to make his mark as an airlifter. As Commander of the Berlin Airlift task Force, he established the airlift flow into and out of the city, in November 1951, he took command of the military air transport service (MATS) where over the next six years and one - half years he oversaw establishment of MATS as the single manager operating agency for airlift service, the civil reserve air fleet, and the airlift service industrial fund. Under his command, Mats supported the Korean War, The Suez Crisis, and the Hungarian Refugee Evacuation.
