Inscription.  The early morning skirmish in Fraley Field alerted forward Union commanders to the tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers descending upon their southernmost camps. General Benjamin M. Prentiss hastily organized a battle line along the next ridge in front of you to engage the massive Confederate onslaught. Fighting continued here for about an hour as Union troops halted and hurled back the initial Confederate attacks. As more Confederate brigades entered the fight, threatening their exposed flanks, Prentiss' troops retired their battle line one-quarter mile north to defend their camps.

Still advancing, firing as we moved, I, at last, saw a row of little globes of pearly smoke streaked with crimson, breaking out with sportive quickness from a long line of bluey...figures.
