Known as the "Queen of Lynhaven", Ruby Tucker lived not far from this park on Lynhaven Drive for most of her adult life. She was an ardent advocate for her neighborhood and the City of Alexandria.
Ruby Tucker was a caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother not only to her own family but to scores of foster children she cared for throughout her life. She served from 1996 to 2008 on the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority where she was a voice for extending services to the city's most needy residents. Ruby was a passionate founding member, deaconess and missionary of the First Agape Baptist Community of Faith of Alexandria where she served as a faithful steward until her death. She could reliably be found running the local polling station as an elections official, a job she performed for more than 30 years. She was a dedicated director of the ALIVE Child Development Center, a member of the Alexandria Senior Services Agency and a long-time volunteer with Alexandria City Public Schools.
Most importantly perhaps, was the work Ruby did in the neighborhood of Lynhaven. She served for many years as n officer and later president of the Lynhaven Citizens Association. Beginning in the 1970s, Ruby Tucker worked alongside her neighbors and in partnership with the City to eliminate crime, encourage code enforcement and educate residents to actively participate in neighborhood issues. Her main objective through the years was the improve the quality of life in Lynhaven — a legacy that will endure long into the future.
