1. The Baldwin Home Marker
Inscription. Father Damien recognized the special needs of children at the settlement. In 1886 he organized a home for boys. By 1894 the home included 29 separate structures on this site. The line of tall palms bordering the far side of this field marked the rear boundary of the complex.

In 1895 the home was named to honor its benefactor, Henry P. Baldwin of Maui. That same year four Brothers of the Sacred Heart arrived to care for the Baldwin Home residents. The home's residents remained here until December 24, 1932, when they were moved to the new Baldwin Home at Kalaupapa.

A Life of Service
Brother Joseph Dutton arrived in 1886 to work as a volunteer at the Kalawao settlement. A Civil War veteran seeking atonement for earlier sins, he lived a life of penance in service of his fellow man. Brother Dutton was devoted to the Baldwin Home boys and performed many medical and nursing duties: He also served as stonemason, architect, gardener, druggist, secretary and postmaster, and helped complete many of Father Damien's projects.

Brother Dutton's faithful correspondence kept the outside world well informed about life at the settlement. He died in 1931 after 44 years of dedicated service at Kalawao.

“Even the boys in the still rude boy's home at Kalawao, appeared cheerful and youthful; they interchange diversions in the boys' way; are one week for football, and the next devotees of marbles or of kites; have fiddles, drums, guitars, and penny whistles …” — Robert Louis Stevenson, 1889
