1. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953) was a well-known American writer of the 1930s and ‘40s who drew material for her stories from the rugged Alachua County region and, in particular, a small unincorporated community of Cross Creek, situated about 20 miles southeast of Gainesville. 2. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings History and Legacy. In 1928 Marjorie bought a 72-acre orange grove near Cross Creek, Florida, and she and her husband moved there in November of that year. It was the place and people she encountered that inspired her greatest literary successes. Marjorie did much of her writing on her screened porch, working at her typewriter on a table constructed by Charles Rawlings. 3. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park. Visitors to this old Florida homestead can walk back in time to 1930s farm life when Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings lived and worked in the tiny community of Cross Creek.
