Milford in Oakland County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
What Happened Here?
This body of water, known as Kingfisher Lagoon, is connected to Kent Lake by a culvert that runs under the road. Over the years, this pond changed in appearance.
As ponds and lakes age, soil from the surrounding landscape washes into the water; this gradually raises the lake bottom. In addition, aquatic plants die and settle to the bottom contributing to the filling-in process. As this buildup continues, land plants move into the former aquatic area and the shoreline advances toward the center of the lake. Finally, the lake disappears altogether. This process is known as eutrophication or aquatic succession.
What's pictured here is the shoreline in 1956. The pink line represents the shoreline in 2015. Do you remember when Kingfisher Lagoon looked different?
