" I see the domes as a spiritual space. They create an atmosphere of quiet ontemplation. Sounds resonate in a wonderful way inside the domes & particular tones will vibrate within your body when you talk or hum. It is a warm feeling of being enveloped by the sounds."
- Laurie Spencer on her dome structures.
Built in the summer of 2012, over 50 volunteers helped construct the sculpture including our pottery students, community, board & staff members under the instruction of Laurie.
The ceramic dome was built, dried & fired over a 6 week period.
Over 22 tons of clay was used on the project & it took about 2 weeks to build the 8ft by 7ft structure.
The kiln was custom built around the finished structure with scaffolding, ceramic fiber, wire, clay buttons and metal fencing.
It took 3 days to fire the kiln to temperatures around 2000 degrees using about a cord of wood.
