Duesenberg
The name Duesenberg is forever linked with early motorsports. In 1913, German immigrant brothers Fred and Augie Duesenberg founded the company that bore their name in St. Paul, Minn., to produce the best high-performance custom engines and racecars available. They exceeded their goals. In the 1920s, following a relocation to New Jersey, and then to the Hooster State to be near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Duesenbergs were leading the sport in innovation and success.
Duesenberg drivers were among the sport's elite. Included among them were Indfana's own George Souders and Roscoe Sarles, as well as Pete DePaolo, Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Murphy, Tommy Milton, and Ira Vail. Duesenbergs set land speed records on sand and salt, won the French Grand Prix at LeMans, scored three Indianapolis 500 victories, and racked up wins on board and dirt tracks as well as road courses. Each fell victim to the Great Depression, and by the 1930s the last checkered flag was waved for these grand marques.
