1. To Commend Their Example / Exemple Admirable Marker
Dedicated in 1882, this majestic monument honors Augusta's Civil War dead. Fifty feet from the base to sword tip, it features the figure of a woman representing Patriotism guarding the honor of her martyred sons. In her hands are an American flag and the sword that saved the nation. Bronze panels present United States and State of Maine seals, and a trophy features infantry, artillery, and cavalry arms of battle. Three panels depict scenes of war: duty seen as a farmer called to fight; the cost of war seen as combat and death; and the return depicted as happiness and grif. Two tablets complete the monument. One lists the Augusta men who died, and the other reads "In honor of her heroic sons who died in the war for the Union and to commend their example to succeeding generations."
