Inscription. The Militia Storehouse was built in 1915 by the Quartermaster Corps and was assigned to the Maine National Guard. The concrete building was used by the 240th Coast Artillery Regiment for storage of tents, bunks, and other equipment required during its annual summer encampment at Fort Williams. Originally the regiment camped on the parade ground and at other sites, but in the 1930s the area behind the storehouse was designated as the National Guard Camp, and the WPA constructed a series of wooden buildings to serve as headquarters, mess halls, and latrines, and built scores of cement slabs upon which tents were erected for the use of the guardsmen. The name of this building was changed to National Guard Storehouse in 1939, shortly before the 240th Coast Artillery was called to active duty to garrison Fort Williams and the other forts defending Portland Harbor.
