, The depression in the bank across the street is one of the last visible remains of a once thriving shipbuilding industry which existed along the western banks of the Kennebunk River. Prior to 1790, most shipbuilding was done on the Mousam River. In 1790 ship builder Tobias Lord began buiding vessels on the Kennebunk River. Eentually over a dozen shipyards were in operation here at what is known as Kennebunk Landing. This in-land location was protected from coastal weather and closer to the local timber supply. Over 100 vessels were built here. This location became obsolete in 1874 due to the demand for larger vessles and shipbuilding shifted closer to the ocean at Lower Village Kennebunk and in Kennebunkport, where the water is deeper.,
