February 15, 1898 • Havana Harbor, Cuba
U.S.S. Battleship Maine explodes killing 260
The event is used by hawkish Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt to pressure President McKinley into the Spanish-American conflict. The cause of the explosion remains certain over a hundred years later.

This gun was salvaged from the U.S.S. Battleship Maine, placed here circa 1915, and restored in 2014.
