Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Alfredo Zalce
mAcAZ

The "Alfredo Zalce Contemporary Art Museum (by acronyms in Spanish: MACAZ) is located on a triangular piece of land that once belonged to the people from the old neighborhood of "San Pedro", today Cuauhtemoc Park. In 1854 the indigenous people permuted this neighborhood for the "Aguacate” (Avocado) Ranch. The Government of the State of Michoacan acquired the 16 hectares property and divided them into smaller lots that were given to private people who built country houses with enormous gardens, as this beautiful example. In those times, this zone was considered the outside of the city.

This two stories building, surrounded by beautiful gardens, was constructed in the year of 1897. Its architectonic style is not easy to define, because most of Morelia's old buildings are baroque. This particular one was erected during the Age known as Porfiriato (period in which Mexico was governed by Porfinio Diaz), when Mexican Architecture had a lot of European influence. Nevertheless we may describe it as one of the best examples of Morelia's French Romantic tendency, by the end of the 19th century. Since then, this property had belonged to several distinguished Morelian families.

In 1971 the State Goverment acquires the property

with the idea of creating a Contemporary Art Gallery for the city of Morelia. Founded and directed by Manuel Aguilar de la Torre, as Head of the Department of Cultural Promotion, was first opened on September 30, 1971, being inaugurated by the Governor of Michoacan, Mr. Servando Chávez Hemández. Over the next year its name changed for the *Contemporary Art Museum”. Few years later the museum becomes part of the Michoacan Cultural Institute, today Secretariat of Culture of the State of Michoacan.

By the end of 1980, the museum dosed its doors following restoration work and reopened again in 1984, with a magnificent exhibition of drawings, paintings, engravings, ceramics, sculpture and tapestry, all works from the great Michoacan artist Alfredo Zalce. In 1993, Architect Angel Diaz Cano, then Director of the Museum, gave it the name of “Alfredo Zalce”, in honor to one of the most relevant Medcan artists, bom in Patzcuaro, Michoacan.

Nowadays the MACAZ presents different Contemporary Art exhibitions from many national and internationals artists, as well as the prestigious Biannual Art Contest “Bienal Nacional de Pintura y Grabado Alfredo Zalce”. The art collection of the Museum holds in storage, more than 3500 pieces of diverse techniques such as: drawings, paintings, engravings, photography, sculpture, ceramics and textiles, from recognized national and international artists.
