1. Welcome to Cliff Island Marker
Inscription.
You have landed on one of the fourteen Main Coastal Island which have year-round communities with public schools. Once there were three hundred such communities.

Cliff Island lies at a Latitude of 43° 42' North and a Longitude of 70° 8' West within the City Limits of Portland.

The Island extends approximately two iles Nor'east-Sou'west and at the widest point one mile Nor'west-Sou-east.

It was named Crotch Island until 1892 when the U.S. Post Office was officially established here.

There are ninety summer houses and forty year-round homes on the island. The principal and traditional occupation here is lobstering. About ten lobster boats operate out of the Boat Cove, which is protected from the most dangerous winter winds.

Gasoline, heating oil, and grocieries are sold at Fisherman's Wharf in the Cove and most services and repairs are available on the island. There is a seasonal store and take-out at the head of this wharf.

The island has a Seventh day Adventist Church, an excellent small Library and an Association Hall for assemblies and entertainment.

The ACE Ballfield Land serves recreational, educational and conservation nees within the community.

Children attend a one-room school here through the fifth grade and ride the ferry

Cliff Island has no public beach, park or camping ground. Please do not intrude on the land we own and care for unless invited. Please keep our land and water free of paper, plastic, cans and bottles. We have a trash collection service, a returnable center and a recycling program.

Most important of all please respect the acute fire danger on our island!
