In 1837 the Tallahassee-St. Marks Railroad was open for
regular business operations.

In 1983 the railroad was closed, after 146 years of operation. The following year, the Florida Department of Transportation purchased 16 miles of the corridor and Florida's first "Rails to Trails" project began.

The Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail runs 16 miles from Florida's capital city to the coastal community of St. Marks.
