Macon in Bibb County, Georgia — The American South (South Atlantic)
Emerson Building
Built in 1859 for Dr. George Emerson, the building is a prominent example of Italianate architecture. The 23 foot wide Brownstone was designed by New York architects, T. Thomas & Sons, who are also renowned for the Hay House. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building showcases solid hardwood doors rising 12 feet tall, four inches thick and windows are 16 feet high. The parlor is 30 feet long with a 28 foot high barrel ceiling. A curved staircase has the original mahogany banisters.
Between 1864 and 1865, both sides during the War Between the States briefly occupied the building. Dr. Emerson and, later, Dr. W. P. Holmes and son operated successful dental practices here for over 80 years. Restorations of the building began in 1985 by Emmett Barnes and in 2008 by Tony Widner. Local Macon artist, Sterling Everett, was commissioned to paint large murals of 1800's Macon scenes within the original moldings of the parlor. Benjy Griffith completed a full restoration of the entire building in 2018.
