In the year 1927, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) took on the project to restore and preserve Fort Yargo. Led by Charles O. Maddox, members of the Kiwanis Club and the Lions Club set out to preserve the fort. With the help of Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. in 1954, 1,497 acres were donated to the state. Other lands were acquired to bring the acreage count to 1,814.
