More about this marker. The marker is at the entrance to the cemetery, as stated, it is on private land, but accessible. Sadly, the cemetery is mostly overgrown and some of the graves are deteriorated. The graves are basically about 2' high and are only denoted by a "M" or "W" and a number...no names.

The Dixmont State Hospital opened November 11, 1862 and soon grew to capacity over the years to house over 1,000 patients, many of them were brought to the hospital under horrendous conditions, abandoned by family and friends, and it was there that most of them spent the remainder of their lives.
