1. W. H. Kreger Building Marker
Inscription.
This three front building was built by 1886. Its notable architecture details are the metal cornice, corbeled brick frieze and brick hoodmolds.

This building has housed a variety of businesses including a clothing store, boot & shoe store, piano & jewelry store and a number of restaurants including the Blue Bird Café. But the most impressive merchant to run a business here was W.H. Kreger.

Kreger bought the building in 1892 and used part of it for his bakery. Being an aggressive businessman, he did his best to capitalize on the booming coal mining industry in the area. He sent sales representatives to the mining camps to sell his bakery goods and ice cream. After the orders were taken the products were then delivered to the families by horse and wagon.

In addition to producing bakery goods and ice cream for wholesale and route sales, Kreger also maintained a popular soda fountain and bakery shop in this building. Kreger’s business was not only good for himself and his employees, but also for the surrounding farmers since he annually bought tons of their produce.
