Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club was organized in 1853; among the original organizers were Thomas and Joseph Emery, Cincinnati industrialists,: J. B. Trevor, John A. Townley and Rutherford B. Hayes. The original home of the organization was at the Apollo Building and was later removed to the Commercial Building and then to the Old Grand Opera House, where a fire in January 1901 required the relocation of the organization. It was temporarily housed and quarters rented from Thomas Emery at the southwest comer of Shillito Place and Race Street. A fundraising effort was begun in February 1901 with a letter signed by M. C. Longenecker, Superintendent. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Warner and Atkins after a committee of the organization toured similar facilities throughout the country and in particular facilities of a like nature in the northeastern portion of the United States. The cornerstone was laid on April 26, 1902, and the building was constructed at a cost of $64,000.00 for the structure.…
