1. T. Caroline Acheson Building Marker
During this time period one of the best ways to invest your money was to put it in real estate. Acheson was one of several business people in Albia that followed this belief. After her husband, a local doctor, passed away she built a two story brick building at this location and lived above it while renting the first floor out. After the fire of 1904 destroyed that building she built the one you see now.
The building originally had two store fronts and was used for a variety of businesses until the early 1930s when the central staircase was taken out and the first floor was made into one store.
During most of the time since then, Gambles Department Store occupied the building (1946-1984).
