1. Civil War Changes Marker
Inscription. During the Civil War, regular army regiments were sent east and replaced with state and territorial forces. Despite these personnel changes, daily life at the fort remained the same.

(Captions)
In the months leading up to the Civil War in April of 1861, Captain John P. McCown was in command of Fort Randall. By May, McCown had resigned his commission and joined the Confederacy.

Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon.

(Book pages)
I left the Indian country to take part in the Civil War in 1861, as did many officers and soldiers of the 2nd U.S. Infantry. Captain William M. Gardner of Company D resigned his commission and joined the Confederacy when his native State of Georgia seceded from the Union. There, I have been told, he became a brigadier general and lost a leg during the war.

When war broke out, Captain Nathaniel Lyon of Company B was in command of the arsenal at St. Louis, Mo. He too became a brigadier general, and did much to save the State of Missouri to the Union. He was killed at the battle of Wilson's Creek.
