(Book pages)
I left the Indian country to take part in the Civil War in 1861, as did many officers and soldiers of the 2nd U.S. Infantry. Captain William M. Gardner of Company D resigned his commission and joined the Confederacy when his native State of Georgia seceded from the Union. There, I have been told, he became a brigadier general and lost a leg during the war.
When war broke out, Captain Nathaniel Lyon of Company B was in command of the arsenal at St. Louis, Mo. He too became a brigadier general, and did much to save the State of Missouri to the Union. He was killed at the battle of Wilson's Creek.
