1. Bison Meadow Marker

Inscription. The Bison Meadow is a 2 acre prairie planted in 1994 on a terminal branch of the historic Natchez Trace which is today Hillsboro Road. This "old indian trail” is where buffalo, bear, elk and other large animals once roamed north to the big salt lick on the Cumberland River. The sculpted bison stand in a meadow of prairie grasses, compass plants, coneflowers, and blazing stars. Prairie ecosystems on Indian grass, big and little bluestem were once abundant across the Middle Tennessee landscape and persisted because of Indian fires and grazing buffalo. The Bison Meadow is similar to a Middle Tennessee "barrens or prairie” natural area that is now rare.
