Inscription.
The Round Cage is the oldest exhibit at the Zoo. It was considered state-of-the-art when it was built in 1876, the same year that the Zoo was founded.

"My first memory—I was about three years old—was of my grandmother pushing me in a baby carriage in the park when we came upon this bear cage. I remember that it had two gray bears in it, medium size. People would throw them peanuts." — recollection of C.C. Jones, born in 1916*

*Mr. Jones shared this memory in 2007 at the age of 91. He had many other stories to tell about the park and its tiny zoo because he had the unique experience of growing up within park limits. His father and older brother both served as "Superintendent of Parks and Squares" for the City of Baltimore. The family lived in the Superintendent's House, located on a parcel of land across Auchentoroly Terrace that was then part of the park. The house and stable have been renovated and are now headquarters for Baltimore's Parks and People Foundation.
