Because elephants are so big, they take little notice of fences. They either step over them or walk right through them.
In 2009, the dry Boteti River began flowing again. It forms the western boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The resurgence of the river attracted elephants in large numbers, bringing them close to nearby villages. The river was no barrier to the elephants and soon, they were wandering beyond park boundaries and into community lands.
Botswana is home to the largest population of African elephants in the world. This is where Elephants for Africa (EFA), a conservation partner of the Maryland Zoo, conducts its research and collaborates with local residents to promote human-wildlife coexistence.
"Elephants were not common in this area when I was a young boy. The villagers were so amazed to see such a big animal."
Thatayaone Motsentwa, EFA Research Assistant and resident of Khumaga
