Villa del Carbón originated in a group of Spaniards who received a grant of lands in the early XVIIIth century. They gathered around the image of the Virgen de la Peña de Francia, who was brought from Spain along with another one that is in Salamanca, Guanajuato. The worship of this virgin has its origin in the Sierra de Francia, Salamanca, Spain, where miracles are attributed to her regarding the struggle between Muslims and Christians during the Reconquest.

The image is dark and there is a popular legend among the inhabitants of Villa del Carbón to note that when the image was originally transferred by a caravan of Spaniards hid among the sacks of coal never to leave the village. Her feast day is december 8, when it is celebrated with fireworks, processions and pilgrimages. As part of the festivities a regional fair is also organized with exhibitions and charro competitions.

The church probably started on the second decade, won the category of parish in 1723. It has a
