Inscription. The Kiwanis Vulcan Trail follows the bed of the old Birmingham Mineral Railroad, where trains hauled iron ore from Red Mountain mines to furnaces and foundries in Birmingham. Some remnants of those mines still remain today. The opening to Lone Pine Mine is visible beneath Vulcan. From the trail, you can see the foundation of an ore crusher and, if you look up the hill, sometimes the foundation of an old hoist house is visible.
