Florence Joyner Olympiad Park
Florence Joyner Olympiad Park marks the 36th park to be built in the City of Mission Viejo. Dedicated to the memory of Florence Joyner, the 17-acre park reflects her flair for style and her cherished values and ideals, including love of family, pursuit of excellence, and quest for the Olympic dream. With this park, the City of Mission Viejo also salutes other local U.S. Olympians who have lived and trained in Mission Viejo.
The park site shares a moment in the pages of Olympic history. In 1984, the residents of Mission Viejo opened their hearts and homes to the world by hosting the Olympic men's and women's division of the cycling road races. The Florence Joyner Olympic Park site is located along the cycling route on the approach to the finish line. The local terrain and curves of the course proved to be deceptively rigorous and demanding. Thousands of spectators from around the world stood here to watch these events, and were witness to the first women's cycling road race to be held in the history of the Olympics.
