English translation:
Pottery Workshop Neighborhoods of Metepec
In its prehispanic origins, Metepec was a region of lakes, which dried up over time, but that left a deep imprint on the culture and identity of its inhabitants. Since that time comes the pottery tradition of Metepec, which has passed from father to son for generations. Young people learn from their elders the traditional techniques, ranging from the selection of land, molding and modeling and how to bake and decorate each piece.

This has given Metepec a big reputation worldwide for the quality of their pottery pieces. Pulque jugs, sculptures, figures for nativities, suns, moons and even skull catrinas leave the skilled hands of artisans from Metepec, which can be observed in artisanal workshops on the neighborhoods of Santiaguito, Santa Cruz, San Mateo and Espiritu Santo.

Among the more traditional pieces that have brought fame to Metepec are the famous trees of life, representing multicolor meeting in paradise

between Adam and Eve with the serpent, which offers temptations, while being observed by God the Father. Another interesting figure is the tlanchana, representing a woman with a fish tail, playing a guitar. This sort of siren has its origin in ancient legends, in which a beautiful woman, half human and half snake, courted men to drown in the waters of the lakes of Metepec.
