The Chapel of the Virgin of Sorrows
Chapel of the Virgin of Sorrows
The year the original church was founded is not known since it was first a chapel to pray at the stations of the cross.
The New Calvary (as it was identified in documents of the period) was constructed in 1788 and improvements were made in 1799. In 1859 it was enlarged and new installations were begun in 1872. By 1885 it included the chapel, the atrium, and the sacristy.
The layout and the facade are baroque. The decoration inside is neoclassic except for the altar of Our Lady of Peace, which is baroque. The main image, to which the church is consecrated, is that of the Virgin of Sorrows, the Virgin Mary dressed in mourning suffering at the foot of the cross. The image was donated by Juan Gutiérrez in 1859.
The main fiesta takes place on September 16 with the birthday song (Las Mañanitas) being sung very early in the morning to the Virgin by the faithful. As in many church celebrations, the principal festivities take place on the nearest weekend. On Saturday, a mass of preparation is said. On Sunday, another mass and on Monday the final celebration is held.
The coronation of the Virgin has bee celebrated for about 50 years, on October 15.
