Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Metepec
y Ex Convento Franciscano

de los Magueyes" there is the architectural ensemble formed by the former Franciscan convent and the parish of San Juan Bautista de Metepec. In 1569, a small church was built, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, but the agricultural community of the time chose Saint Isidore the Farmer as its true patron. In 1741 the church was torn down and on the same site the present church was built with a beautiful baroque facade; in 1775 it became a parish, and Cayetano Jacinto de Sotomayor became its first priest.

The former Franciscan convent is a magically admirable place, because it has paintings on its walls that are distinguished by the Franciscan cord that frames them and elements of the indigenous worldview, rescued by fine work done a few years ago.

Open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm., everyday except on Wednesday.
