Inscription.
Chinese Memorial. Evergreen Cemetery. Between June 2005 and May 2006, over 174 burial sites of unknown persons were discovered during the construction of the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension. They were part of the indigent cemetery or "potter's field, located at the eastern end of Evergreen Cemetery between 1st Street and what was then known as Brooklyn Avenue, where over 13,000 persons were buried between 1877 and 1924. A significant portion of the discovered remains were associated with Asian, and likely Chinese burials. According to cemetery records, over 1,400 of the burials were of Chinese persons who, because of racial discrimination, were denied a final resting place in Evergreen Cemetery. We dedicate this memorial to these forgotten pioneers of Los Angeles with the hope that they will always be remembered.
