Inscription.
This memorial to
William Poole Bancroft
overlooks that part of the Bancroft Farm given by him to the City in 1889. His offer of this land for a park inspired the purchase of the Brandywine Valley and other subsequently acquired for the city park system.

He was president of the Board of Park Commissioners 1904 - 1923.

A good citizen of a singular modesty and sincerity, his utmost thought of himself might have been expressed "I pray thee then, write me as one who loved his fellow men."
