Inscription. Philadelphia-born Coleman Sellers was a life-long engineer whose expertise was in locomotives, a new form of transportation in the mid-1800s. He is known for overseeing the creation of the first hydroelectric dam at Niagara Falls and, among many other inventions, creating the first operative moving-picture camera, which he called the "kinematoscope." Sellers was a professor of mechanics at the Franklin Institute, where he served as both vice president and president. He went on to become the president of the American Society of the Mechanical Engineers.
