Water connects us
Red pandas don't use water like otters do, but they depend on water too. In the wild, they're consistently found no more than 100 yards from a stream or river. And the bamboo forests they live in provide a water-related benefit to people as well—they hold rainwater, slow runoff and reduce flooding risk.
Q: Could our red pandas be among the last of their kind?
As you can see from these maps, red panda habitat has changed significantly. Their wild population has substantially declined even as much as 50%. If the trend continues the red panda species native to China may be extinct by 2050.
A: Not if we can help it.
There is a Global Species Management Plan for red pandas. Essentially, that means there is on international and collaborative focus among zoos to help protect this species from extinction!
Past population: 20,000 red pandas.
Present population: 10,000 red pandas.
The population has decreased 50 percent.
