1. History of the Fountain Marker
Inscription. The Franklin Square Fountain was originally built in 1838 after City Council passed a resolution in 1837 calling for a fountain of "grand dimensions." It was the centerpiece to the Square in the late 19th century. It is thought to be the longest surviving fountain in one of William Penn's original five squares. Sadly, it fell into disrepair and had not worked for nearly thirty years. In 2006, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. renovated the Square and restored the fountain to its original glory. Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is grateful to the Board of Directors of City Trusts for ongoing support to sustain this treasure.
